Growing up, station wagons were the definition of uncool. For many, the station wagon was a source of great embarrassment and humiliation. Nobody wanted to be picked up from the school dance in a wood paneled Malibu Classic. As a result, our generation has been largely resistant to the idea of purchasing station wagons, and for many years mini-vans and SUVs have been the family vehicle of choice for Gen-X. (not that mini-vans are any cooler).
It seems as though times are changing though. The wagon has come back into favor with Generation X, or so say the car companies. Luxury car makers like Acura, Lexus ,and Mercedes are betting on maturing Gen-Xers to fill out the sales of their new lines of so-called sport wagons, or sport cross wagons.
Could it be that Gen-X has made amends with the the station wagon? Well, probably not the station wagon of the 80’s, but these new sport wagons bare few resemblances to Clark W. Griswold’s infamous “Metallic Pea Sport Wagon”. They are great looking, functional, performance-oriented, and comparatively economical. Most models, including those from Acura and Lexus, are priced better and are more economical to operate than our long standing favorite: the Sport Utility Vehicle.
These new sport wagons are the perfect way to graduate into responsible adult/parent life, while still riding in style.
Here you can see some more pictures of the 2009 Honda/Acura eurospec wagon that may be coming soon to the US.
