Is it Better to Buy or Rent?

for-rentMint.com is one of my favorite websites and is a really useful resource for everything finance. They recently featured an article titled The Renter’s Manifesto that points out some common misconceptions about the benefits of buying a house versus renting an apartment.

This was the first time I actually heard someone defending the idea of paying rent instead of paying a mortgage, but is this article makes some interesting points and makes me feel a little bit better about being in my tenth year of renting. Either way, I still really want to buy a house soon.

The NY Times has a really cool calculator you can use to determine whether you are better off renting an apartment or buying a house. According to the calculator, if you plan to live somewhere for less than seven years you are better off paying rent. Interesting.
